August 2026 Testing

Most summers, the Ueshiro Carleton Karate Dojo goes dormant, and we do not have any testing candidates. This summer after a change in plans due to the fires in the Boundary Waters, Sempai Pax Hayman joined us for several weeks of training, earning an invitation to test for Go-Kyu – two green tips. Below is the write-up of our combined testing event with the Ueshiro Northfield Dojo. Congratulations to all the candidates!
Onegai shimasu Hanshi, Kyoshi, Sensei, and all Deshi!
The Ueshiro Carleton and Ueshiro Northfield dojo are pleased to announce the results of our joint promotion event, held Saturday, August 15th!
Congratulations to our students who were promoted to their next rank:
Yon-Kyu (Green Belt):
- Freyja Ingvoldstad (Northfield, youth)
Go-Kyu (Two Green Tips):
- Pax Hayman (Carleton)
Ro-Kyu (One Green Tip):
- Page Nelson (Northfield)
We began with the traditional warm-up exercises and basics as described in the 50th Anniversary Journal. We continued with leg work, deep knee bends, and kicks before the group performed repetitions of Fukyugata Ichi, Fukyugata Ni, and Fukyugta San together.
The Board of Judges then got ready, and the candidates demonstrated their kata with great spirit and focus. After the candidates demonstrated their basics, our Yon-Kyu candidate was joined by a hardy group fellow deshi to demonstrate Oyo-Tan-Ren. The full group of candidates then returned to answer questions from the board about our Shinden, the composers of the kata, and the impacts that training has made on their lives.
Senior students demonstrated a selection of Pinan, Naihanchi, and Black Belt kata as well as weapons kata to give our newest students a taste of what is to come as they continue to train and progress in their karate journey.
The Board of Judges included Sensei Steve Hatle, Sensei Guy Lawrence, and Sempai David Huyck. Domo arigato to Sempai Cailin Huyck Orr for calling the test, and Sempai Vincent Sommer for leading the group through yakusoku kumite repetitions while the Board conferred.
Domo arigato to Hanshi and the Kyoshi for keeping the joy, spirit, and power of Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate alive and strong for all of us who are training!
Respectfully,
Sensei Steve Hatle, Yon-Dan
Shihan of Ueshiro Northfield Shorin-Ryu Karate Dojo of Minnesota
Sempai David Huyck, Ni-Dan
