June 2025 Tip Test

Onegai shimasu Hanshi, Kyoshi, Sensei, and all USRKUSA Deshi –

The Ueshiro Carleton Karate Dojo in Minnesota held an end-of-term testing and promotion event on Monday, June 2nd, 2025. We were supported by our Ueshiro Northfield dojo community in spirit and in actuality, as we held the test during their usual class time to accommodate the college students’ complicated schedules.

Congratulations to our nine students who earned promotions! Six students, who have attended classes for the entire academic year, were promoted to Go-Kyu, two green tips:

  • Trixie Aguas
  • Luke Heschel
  • Jiao Jiao Nelson
  • Sophie Newmark
  • Jeremie Rault-Wang
  • Dynamique Twizere

Three more were promoted to Ro-Kyu, one green tip:

  • Dairen Castro
  • Nathaniel Conroy
  • Matthew Murashige
The successful candidates for promotion stand in a line for the Q&A portion of the test: Jeremie Rault-Wang, Matt Murashige, Dairen Castro, Trixie Aguas, Sophie Newmark, Luke Heschel, Nathaniel Conroy, Dynamique Twizere, and Jiao Jiao Nelson

Our session began with a traditional workout including kihon and kata following the guidelines in the 50th Anniversary Journal. We then proceeded to the test, beginning with kata demonstration, continuing to basics, and finishing with questions and answers.

Domo arigato to the Board of Judges, consisting of Carleton Shihan, David Huyck, Ni-Dan, who also called the test; Sensei Steve Hatle, Yon-Dan and Shihan of the Northfield dojo; Sensei Guy Lawrence, San-Dan; and our newest San-Dan, Sensei Scott Sijan.

Domo arigato gozaimasu to Sempai Brent Pellinen, Sho-Dan, and to Sempai Cailin Huyck Orr, Ik-Kyu, who led the group in kata as the board of judges organized themselves and conferred. And a special thanks to our campus liaison, Aaron Chaput, who helped us find indoor space to avoid inclement weather and poor air quality at the last minute.

Domo arigato gozaimasu to Hanshi Robert Scaglione, Kyoshi Michael Mackay, and to Sensei Bob Dobrow and Sensei Steve Hatle for all your help to establish and support this new dojo at Carleton, and for supporting me through my first year as Shihan. I could not have done any of this without your guidance. My gratitude extends to Grand Master Ansei Ueshiro and all of the Shinden who have nurtured and passed along our Karate through the years.

As the academic year closes, I look forward to next fall, when our new cohort of karateka return to campus and pass along what they have learned to the next group of white belts! Zenshin!
