Fall 2024 Tip-Test

Onegai shimasu, Hanshi, Kyoshi, and all Deshi –
The Ueshiro Northfield and Ueshiro Carleton dojo recently held a joint fall tip-test at Carleton’s Cowling Gymnasium. The session opened with Sempai David Huyck running through warm-ups, kihon, and basics. The class then proceeded to several performances of Fukyugata Ichi, starting at half-speed and power, then with snap, and concluding with full-speed, full-power with no count.
The deck was then cleared for the running of the test. Domo arigato to our board of judges: Sempai Brent Pellinen, Sho-Dan, Sempai Scott Sijan, Ni-Dan, and Sensei Guy Lawrence, San-Dan. The test was run by the two Shihan, Sempai David Huyck, Sho-Dan, and Sensei Steve Hatle, Yon-Dan. Domo
arigato to Sempai Vincent Sommer, Sho-Dan, for calling the test.
All four testing candidates were enthusiastically promoted to Ro-Kyu, one green tip:
Carleton:
Luke Heschel
Jeremie Rault-Wang
Jimmy Carlson
Northfield:
Scott Godfrey
Following the test, Sensei Steve Hatle had the full group perform Fukyugata Ichi a few more times before opening the deck to volunteers Three non-candidate white belts bravely demonstrated Fukyugata Ichi on their own, before the advanced Kyu-ranks took the deck to demonstrate Pinan Shodan, followed by a black belt demonstration of Wankan, giving the newer deshi a view into their future training.
Domo arigato Hanshi, Kyoshi, and all Deshi of Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu for sharing your art with us, and inspiring us to pass on what we have learned. And a special congratulations to the Ueshiro Carleton students for being the first to be promoted in this new dojo! We look forward to many more – Zenshin! (Forward!)
Respectfully,
Sempai David Huyck, Sho-Dan
Shihan of Ueshiro Carleton Karate Dojo
Sensei Steve Hatle, Yon-Dan
Shihan of Ueshiro Northfield Shorin-Ryu Karate Dojo
